Shameema punctures BJP balloon in Habba Kadal ABID BASHIR Srinagar, Dec 23: National Conference woman face in Srinagar Shameema Firdous Tuesday heaved a sigh of relief after marking her victory yet again from crucial Habba Kadal Assembly segment where BJP had cast a net by banking on migrant votes. In an exclusive chat with Greater Kashmir Shameema said the contest was tough, rather “ very interesting” after BJP’s entry into the fray. “ I would say that my people supported me and rejected the Lotus and other parties,” she said. Admitting that BJP was an important factor in Habba Kadal, Shameema said she was confident about her victory. “ The locals living in Habba Kadal including the Kashmiri Pandits reposed faith in me again. I will leave no stone unturned to serve them again,” she said. After bagging the seat in 2008, Shameema was hoping for a cabinet berth but was given the charge of chairperson State Women’s Commission, not to her satisfaction. “ Let’s see what God has in store for me this time,” she beamed. Shameema, wife of a retired bureaucrat, has been associated with National Conference since past over 30 years. She has worked with Begum Akbar Jehan, the wife of NC patriarch, Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, and also in her individual capacities to strengthen women wing of NC. The supporters of Shameema raised slogans in her favor and garlanded her as she was declared winner. “ It’s really a moment of pride for me. I am happy,” he said. On whether NC would enter into any pact with BJP, she said it was up to the party high command to decide on the issue. “ I can’t comment on this issue,” she said. In Habba Kadal constituency, BJP was sure of victory following the fact that the party was banking on migrant votes of Kashmiri Pandit. “ The contest was interesting. I got over 2000 Kashmiri Pandit migrant votes out of some 2200,” BJP candidate Moti Koul said. He said the defeat he faced should not be projected in a negative way. “ When I campaigned in Habba Kadal, I found young men listening my speeches,” he said. On what were the major reasons for his defeat, Koul said partly BJP’s late entry into the fray. “ We were active since past seven or eight months only, perhaps that is the reason. But the defeat should be taken in a positive manner that we were able to mark our presence effectively,” he said. There were 11 candidates in the fray for Habba Kadal. While Shameema bagged 4955 votes, Koul secured 2596 votes. PDP candidate Zaffar Mehraj bagged 992 votes while Raman Matoo of Congress pocketed 973 votes. Lok Janshakhti Party leader, Sanjay Saraf secured only 830 votes Shameema punctures BJP balloon in Habba Kadal ABID BASHIR Srinagar, Dec 23: National Conference woman face in Srinagar Shameema Firdous Tuesday heaved a sigh of relief after marking her victory yet again from crucial Habba Kadal Assembly segment where BJP had cast a net by banking on migrant votes.
