Shameful! The PC government has capitulated to the interests of the business lobby, taken a page out of the Harper government’s handbook on workers’ rights and double-crossed the labour movement with proposed amendments to the Labour Relations Act. Their decision to amend the Labour Relations Act, which includes reversing union card-based certification is totally disrespectful of the Federation, which was given no indication the Act might be changed and no opportunity to discuss the issue with the Minister of Labour. The provincial government included the card check provisions less than two years ago, and has not provided a shred of evidence as to why these provisions are being taken out so soon. It is an affront to the workers of this province that government did this with absolutely no consultation with the labour movement. This is not how labour legislation is decided, unless you want to emulate the Harper government which has taken similar action on Bill C 525. The government of NL has sided with their business friends over the rights of workers. This change has nothing to do with democracy in the workplace –it’s all about capitulating to the business interests and making it more difficult for workers to organize themselves into unions. If the government under Frank Coleman is going to operate like a Harper government – then I expect it will be a very short lived one. Bring it on!
