Sharanu friends, Since long people are trying to initiate debate on the assumed issue that Lingayats do not have their “holy book of religion” therefore they propose that swamijis and intellectuals of Lingayat religion jointly should select some vachanas of 12th century sharanas, declare collection of such vachanas as “ Dharma grantha “ which should be followed by the Lingayats. According to them similar procedure was adopted In Sikhism to constitute their holy book of religion “Guru Grantha sahib” . I am a practicing Lingayat therefore it concerns me hence I propose to respond. At the outset I have no hesitation in saying that the basic assumption that Lingayats do not have “Dharma grantha” is incorrect and devoid of truth. First of all it has to be realized that religion its principles, philosophy and practices are revealed through the prophets and not conceived by an individual or individuals how so ever great they may be. There fore the book which contains the revelations of the prophet can only be called as “Dharma grantha”. Undisputedly Mahatma Basavanna is the Prophet of Lingayat religion hence his vachanas can only form the “Dharma grantha” of Lingayats and not the vachanas of other sharanas of 12th century or later. Sri Basavanna in his vachanas says that he wrote 1 lakh 96 thousand vachanas they are known as shatsthala vachanas and called as “Guru vachanas”. Guru means Prophet. It is a fact that most of them are destroyed, only 1414 vachanas are available which have been published by Karnataka Govt. They form our “Dharma Grantha” In Sikh religion starting from Guru Nanakdevaji (1469 AD) to Guru Govindsinghaji Maharaj (1666 AD) there have been 10 Gurus. The holy book “Guru Granth sahib” consists of 4957 shlokas of six Gurus and 792 shlokas of 15 different saints. Total shlokas 5749. Even though it is the compilations of shlokas of earlier Gurus and the saints but they are compiled in the form of “ Holy book of religion” by the last guru: means the last Prophet Guru Govind Singhaji Maharaj in 1708 AD. It means the contents of Guru Grantha Sahib are revealed through Prophet. To be brief I wish to assert that Lingayats have a “ Dharma grantha” in the form of “Guru Vachana” of Sri Basavanna. Secondly no swamiji or great intellectual can come anywhere near prophet . . Sharanu
