Shared Paths: A solution for all, requiring a bit of patience, or a disaster waiting to happen? David Hembrow, blogger behind A view from the cycle path investigated and shared his thoughts. His article even includes a video from Pyrmont Bridge in Darling Harbour, in case you thought his views are not relevant to Australia. He explains that due to the nature of cycling, even cyclists that take care are perceived as intimidating by pedestrians. Is it just plain wrong to force cyclists and pedestrians to share the same area? What is your experience as a cyclist ... and as a pedestrian? The M7 shared path in Sydney seems to work fine, but due to its location it is more of a recreational path and not an important connection. But Pyrmont Bridge is an important connection for both cyclists and pedestrians, so bound to hit a few more nerves. Where should shared paths be used and where not? How about having more of them? Some areas dont have safe options for cyclists, so why not slap a Shared Path sign on footpaths to give cyclists an alternative, like this one in Mascot? Or is this just an easy way out for Councils?
