Sharing from our friends at Monroe County Coalition Public Education From Chuck Carney at the IU School of Ed. This is about the new law they are looking to pass: REPAIII: Under the proposed changes, superintendents would need only two years teaching experience and no education specialist degree. In other words, a 24 year old with a bachelors degree and two years in the classroom could be a superintendent. A new adjunct teaching permit would supposedly fill a need for quickly filling teaching slots (which doesnt exist, so far as anyone can tell). This permit for 5 years requires no preparation in classroom management, curriculum, differentiation of instruction, learning assessment, and a host of other things. While allegedly temporary, it can be renewed in perpetuity, given that a few requirements are met. Among those requirements, that a teacher be rated effective in 3 out of the 5 years--that is, 60 percent effective out of the initial license period (a teacher could be completely terrible in two years; rate effective in three of those years and he or she is set). And another new license addition for the arts would allow earning that addition by simply taking a test. A person could get a license to be a band director without ever waving a baton. I find these changes ludicrous and far from improving matters for Indiana students. If you feel the same (or, I guess, even if you somehow dont), I encourage you to submit a public comment to the state through the online form at the link below. You can find a link to the actual code there. If you are outraged by this odious law, you can still submit your public comment. in.gov/sboe/REPAIIIcomment.htm
