Sharing this excerpt from Bruce Gilkins book Distant Runner, shared this with my daughter a while back as i admired her completion of the Austin marathon: But I have always seen distance running as a metaphor for a path well chosen, one where a man chooses to accept lifes most difficult challenges, resistant to taking the shortcuts that lead to shallow gains. The distance runner embarks on the most difficult of journeys by taking a single step. And that first step can often be the most daunting, the prospect of endless miles of pain and suffering that lay ahead too frightening for many to ever attempt. And once the first step is taken, reality sets in, the jolt to the body a rude awakening that pain will accompany every outing, a constant companion that never leaves. But the distance runner continues on, dedicated to the straight and narrow path, his greatest reward internal, the lure of tangilble reward paling in comparison. The distance runner never quits, perhaps the noblest of his traits in a world where heartbreak and despair suffocates those of of lesser faith. Happy Running
