Shaykh Abdullah Idrees of ISNA Canada. These festivities are especially important for those who do not speak the Arabic language, and therefore have to work harder to approximate toward the love and mercy of Allah (SWT). Such celebrations bring Muslims closer to the love of the Prophet (PBUH), his noble character, and his exemplary moral conduct, all of which are often expressed through poetry and other oral/literary means. Through the power of language and the potential of the human spirit, these festivals and celebrations help all become closer to Allah (SWT). Some scholars consider these celebrations as bid’ah (innovation), and argue that the Prophet (PBUH), Ahl il-Bayt (the Prophet’s family), and the Khulafa Al-Rashidoon (Rightly Guided Caliphs) did not participate in, or condone such events. However, even Sh. Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, known to be the strictest opponent of bid’ah in Islam, stated that such festivities can be of great benefit for the Muslims who don’t speak Arabic. Ibn Taymiyyah’s student, Ibn Al-Qayyim Al-Jawziya, held the same opinion. Imam Ibn Katheer, the famous mufassir (interpreter) of the Quran, wrote a famous poem on the milaad (birthday) of the Prophet (PBUH). isnalanterns/2014/01/mercy-to-mankind/
