Shazia Ilmis PRESS STATEMENT Why I am Quitting Shri Arvind Kejriwals AAP ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have decided to give up my membership of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and resign from all positions within the party. This is a difficult decision for me and I continue to believe that the AAP could have done a lot to change the political discourse for the better in the country. A lot of the mistakes that the party has made can be excused by the fact that it is a new party committed to a corruption-free India. But my decision to leave the party is triggered by the lack of inner-party Democracy, specially from a party that constantly talks of Swaraj. I deny whisper campaigns that my resignation has to do with being fielded from Ghaziabad - I wouldnt have valiantly fought from a seat vacated by a national partys president and zero funding from AAP had that been the case. So, heres the simple reason why I am quitting: Voices of dissent are not encouraged and the events of the past week leave me unable to continue to defend the party and its leadership. It is true that people vote differently in Assembly and National elections, but the resounding vote in favour of the BJP in the General Elections should have given AAP the crying need to listening to the voice of the people and that fresh assembly elections were required. Sadly, no one is listening. Instead, the party and a cohort of advisors are substituting street-based agitation as mature strategy. I believe in the original ideals of the AAP and that and it has a lot to be proud of. It is quite an achievement for a party as young as it is, to win 4 Lok Sabha seats. I trust and hope that the party will concentrate on building its grass root base, including raising funds in a transparent manner from the masses and develop a system where its workers, the true aam aadmis have a voice that is heard by the leadership. The leadership of the party must be elected using inner-party democracy and a well-quipped brains trust that makes the agenda clear to the masses. The verdict of the national election clearly shows that the majority in India is aspirational and only a party that is corruption free and will deliver on the aspirations of the people would be unbeatable.
