She inspired me in so many ways. From her fire engine red hair to her need to always have painted nails and lipstick. From digging potatoes early in the summer mornings with her to shelling peas and shucking corn. When mama and daddy said no, granny and granddaddy were just a walk through the woods. I share her love in jewelry and Im honored to be the one who she gave her engagement ring and wedding band to. She taught me to marry someone who was in Gods will and Hed take care of the rest. She always made me her pumpkin pie and no matter how hard I tried mine never tasted as good as hers. We shared a love of cook books and Chippendale calendars. (Im pretty sure shes the only person in the nursing home with Mr August hanging on her wall as we speak). We spent Sundays sitting together on the same pew then headed home to cheer on Eli Manning on NFL Game Days. While she was a die hard Dawg and I bled orange and blue, we both agreed Tim Tebow should be her grandson in law and shed eat her pride and save me Gator articles from the news papers. She always reminded me that a woman could be anything in the world she set her mind to. She believed in education. She also reminded me the importance of voting and how many women fought for my right to voice my opinion. My voice mattered. She believed in paying it forward. She taught me you could be both an awesome mother of 3 successful children, a wonderful wife, and hold down a job and be kick-ass at it too. She loved all Gods creatures, the four legged ones too. Velma was compassionate, but didnt mind telling you when you were completely wrong either. She was a traveler. Her motto was you could always make more money, so never turn down a chance to see the world. And that she did. Im so thankful that we were so close and I saw her nearly everyday. She made the best biscuits and hotdogs. Actually everything she cooked was yummy. Watching her today made me realize how much I have taken for granted these years. If I could do it all over again Id take more pictures, Id ask more questions, I wouldnt have grumbled about the garden work. I would have soaked in each and every second. Watching a strong willed, independent woman slowly become a person you dont recognize is tough. However I come from this woman and Im blessed enough to have that spunk and independence in myself. Thank you Granny for loving me and leaving your mark on my life. Im praying for a peaceful night and Gods comforting touch. Love you Granny!!!
