She made her debut in the world of Hindi cinema music in 1971 with the song Bole Re Papihara in the film Guddi. A deep resonant female voice was heard by music lovers for the very first time. She went on to sing a no of songs in Hindi, Tamil, Malyam, Kannad, Gujarati, Marathi, Marwari, Haryanvi, Bengali and Odiya. She won three National Awards for best Female playback Singer one Filmfare award for best playback singer for her song Mere to Girdhar Gopal from the 1979 movie Meera and the Soth Indian Filmfare Lifetime award besides othe awards notable among them being Mian Tansen Award Best Film Playback Singer of Classical Song in Films for Bol Re Papi Hara given by Sur Singar Samsad, Mumbai. Though she sang for movies her genre remained Hori, Bhajan, Thumri and Dadra. So no surprise when Pt Ravi Shankar composed the music for 1979 hindi movie Meera he selected Vani Jayaram to sing all the bhajans of Meerabai used in the movie. The melancholy of Meerabai in divine love with the almighty through this fabulous bhajan. The Sarangi,Sitar,Flute, santoor and of course Vani Jairams voice made this bhajan on the top of the world. Pt.Ravi Shankar ji has created such a beautiful atmosphere in this heart touching Bhajan. I share this great bhajan to wish Vani Jairam a very happy birthday as she Turns 69 today.
