Shelton Responds to Local Official’s Facebook Post Regarding Ferguson, MO State Rep. Mike Shelton (D-Oklahoma City) issued the following statement today in response to comments posted on Facebook by Larry Stein, the Chief Deputy at the Oklahoma County Assessor’s Office, regarding the people of Ferguson, MO. On his Facebook page, Stein posted, “There hasn’t been this great of a racial divide in American since the 1850’s. Congrats to the thugs and animals in Ferguson!” “I have known Larry for a long time, and I spoke with him this morning about his comments. But I believe local leaders need to be held accountable for their words. I, too, am disappointed at the rioting that has taken place, but I certainly understand where that anger comes from. As leaders, we need to elevate the level of discourse and dialogue rather than resort to name-calling and insults. We all need to make a concerted effort to view issues of this nature through the other person’s eyes, to understand and respect differences in cultures. I have invited Larry to have lunch with me soon so that we can discuss this matter face-to-face and have a deeper conversation about the importance of tolerance. I hope in the future that Larry can devote his work hours to something more fruitful, like doing the business of the taxpayers.
