Sheriff briefs $637 million departmental budget to the Riverside County Board of Supervisors: Sheriff Stan Sniff represented the Sheriffs Department Monday morning, Sept 8th, before the Riverside County Board of Supervisors in Riverside . The Sheriff outlined key components of this fiscal years departmental budget during this years Budget Impact Workshop including the request for $637 million in spending authority this year for patrol, jails, courts & coroner/public administrator responsibilities, and to continue increasing unincorporated patrol end-stength back up to 1.2/1000 over the next few years, in keeping with earlier Board of Supervisors guidance. The Sheriff also explained that we simultaneously will begin the hire of new staff (deputy, correctional deputy & civilian) for the Countys new East County Detention Center (ECDC) in Indio, now under construction - adding nearly 1,300 beds to our badly overcrowded county jail system. The new ECDC will add over 400 NEW jobs for both the Sheriffs Department and within the Coachella Valley over the next 2 years, just in time for the new facility to open in early 2017 when that construction is completed. The Sheriff also briefed the Board on other strategic equipment issues required in upcoming fiscal years, touched upon other current topics like body cameras, upgraded training needs, police militarization and overtime use, all in addition to a lengthy Q&A period.
