Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 329 AM EST Tue Nov 12 2013 Valid 12Z Tue Nov 12 2013 - 12Z Thu Nov 14 2013 ...Unseasonably chilly temperatures spread into the Eastern states... ...Rain and rain/snow showers possible for Mid-Atlantic states behind the cold front... Old man winter makes an appearance across much of the Eastern half of the nation behind a strong cold front which should push off the Mid-Atlantic coast this morning and continue its progression through the Southeastern states throughout the day on Tuesday. A very impressive and strong surface high pressure behind this front keeps temperatures well below normal from the Plains to the Mid-Atlantic throughout the forecast period. Daytime highs could be as much as 10 to 20 degrees below normal across these regions with nighttime temperatures dipping into the 20s or 30s, even as far south as Texas! With these chilly temperatures and some available moisture behind the front, a band of mainly light precipitation is expected to set up across the Mid-Atlantic states on Tuesday. This area could see light rain in the morning transitioning to a rain/snow mix by the afternoon as the coldest air gets ushered into the region. Little to no accumulation is expected except for the higher terrain of the Southern Appalachians which could see some light accumulations. South of this, some scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible for South Florida as the boundary moves through and return flow off the Gulf of Mexico could bring widely scattered rain to parts of Southwest Texas as well. Out west, a relatively tranquil pattern prevails through the short range period. A weakening system over the Eastern Pacific is expected to bring periods of light rain and higher elevation snows for portions of the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies. Very minimal snow accumulations are expected for the higher terrain.
