Short stories of the Pamir. Part 5/6: Murgab to Karakul incl. Ak-Baital pass. The Ak-Baital pass is the highest pass of the Pamir region. The altitude is 4655 meters and it is cold. We have cycled out of Murgab and made it 65 km up on the pass. Wind is picking up and the sun is setting. We decide to set up camp. In the night the temperature plummets to -14. The morning is very cold and we startup slow. By 10 the sun is warming up and we cycle the final 10 km up to the top. It is tough and very steep. We are pushing our bicycles and soon see other familiar cyclists behind us. We reach the top helping each other and wait for the people behind. It is Marianne and Jules we cycled with before. After celebrating our achievement soon we see three more figures crawling up the hill. Martin goes back down to help and soon Holly, David and Bertrand have made it to the highest point of the roof of the world. We are hoping for some good downhill but the first 20 km is off road washboard so we are all shaken when we get down. Finally we reach the tarmac again and we decide to push on to Karakul. We motivate each other keeping each other out of the wind and find a nice homestay where we are welcomed by a Kyrgyz family, warm up and sleep all together in the same room.
