Shortly after proclaiming that ALL had been completely PAID IN FULL -and with the sun still not shining, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Father, I now entrust My spirit into Your hands.” When He had said this, He died. At the same moment of His death, the ground shook violently causing rocks to be split and graves to be opened. And many saints -who had previously passed away- now were resurrected and went into Jerusalem. At that same time -within the Temple, the veil that covered the entrance into the Holy of Holies was torn in two -from the top to bottom. Back at the cross, one of the Roman soldiers -who saw what had happened, praised the Lord God and said, “Surely, He was THE Son of God.” All the many people who came together to see the things that were done, went away beating themselves on their chests. All His friends and the women who had come with Him from Galilee stood a long way off watching these things. (As with some of His other sayings from the cross, Jesus again quotes from the Psalms -Psalm 31:5. It is of note that He opened His sayings with an direct reference to God being His Father -Father, forgive them.... And He closes with another, Father, I entrust My spirit into Your hands. Throughout his time on the cross, Jesus confirmed WHO He was and WHAT He was doing. And once again, He gives evidence that God was indeed His Father. Like us -in His dying moment, it was a moment of trust. He trusted the work and presence of the Lord God. But, it was also a moment of intimacy. The Two belong together: His trust was nurtured by a constant intimacy with the Lord. He had quoted from David -in Psalm 31:5, but Jesus added to the words of David with a direct reference to His Father. Father, into your hands I commit my spirit. As He spoke this, the veil within the Holy of Holies of the Temple was torn in two. This now allowed for a more free and open access to God. So, as our example, Jesus -in His dying moments: Trusted His Father to receive His spirit, Anticipated Their renewed Intimacy and Created an Open Doorway for us to His Father. Like the Roman soldier, we must also proclaim, Surely, He was THE Son of God !) -Luke 23:45-49
