Should CAMRA re-invent itself? Some 40-odd years ago it - TopicsExpress

Should CAMRA re-invent itself? Some 40-odd years ago it generally held true that keg beer was awful and cask ale was a quality product, albeit in danger of extinction. So CAMRA was born and campaigned, very successfully, for the revival of cask ale. It still does. These days however its not so clear. There is an awful lot of bland slop out there that many CAMRA members are rightfully critical of and, dare I say, there is an increasing amount of keg that is rather palatable. The argument seems to have shifted from keg vs. cask to slop vs. quality. And this is where CAMRA is coming unstuck, doggedly sticking to the promotion of cask and real-ale-in-a-bottle. The time has come for CAMRA to pull its head out of its corporate arse and acknowledge, no, embrace whats happening right in front of its nose. Its a broad church so while majoring on the continued promotion of cask, surely there is room for a craft section to campaign for the big brewers to do what theyre all capable of, but have allowed the suits to over-rule, and to campaign for consumers to demand a better product. We know they can do it, they have a 40-year track record of successful campaigning. Quality, variety, value, and a passion for beer transcends dispense method and CAMRA need to move with the times.
