Should Scotland break up its 307-year-old union with England? Hm. - TopicsExpress

Should Scotland break up its 307-year-old union with England? Hm. Scotland and England relationship status: Its complicated. ;) My country of origin has a HUGE, historical day coming up on September 18th: the Scots are voting on a Referendum for Independence from the UK. Many Scots have been waiting lifetimes for this monumental day. Would Scotland be stronger as a country by itself? Or should it stay united with England, Wales and Northern Ireland? Only Scotlands residents get to decide. There are SO many strong arguments for both a Yes vote and a No vote. Leaders of countries, celebrities, and regular folks around the world have been voicing their opinions and the buzz is growing louder each day. I only hope that those eligible to vote (more than 4 million Scots as well as English and foreign residents) carefully consider long-term ramifications for Scotland as a country, and the impact on other countries around the world. Although I was born in Canada, my parents are both Scottish and our ancestry for hundreds of years is 100% Scottish. (I once traced my familys surname and we go back 500 years as Scots; before that, we were Irish!) I lived in Edinburgh from 1978-1998. Now, as an ex-pat in the US since 1999, the Scottish Referendum is a particularly emotional day for me. As one of over a million Scottish ex-pats, we dont get to vote, as we are non-residents. The people of England, Wales and Northern Ireland also dont get to have a say on this landmark day. Tbh, I can actually see both sides: the fiercely independent, proud Scots who are so committed to frrrrreeeeedom, *and* those people around the world who are strong advocates for union over separation, in all ways. I pray for a peaceful outcome whichever vote prevails. #LoveScotland
