Should you start your own publishing company? In the not too - TopicsExpress

Should you start your own publishing company? In the not too distant past there has been much debate on this subject. My past experience as a songwriter was that the industry was far more likely to close their door on me if they learned I had self published my song and acted as the publisher. As a songwriter, I found it much easier to gain a decision makers audience and even easier yet having a professional publisher administer my publishing because they have the know-how as well as the time and necessary means by which to effectively exploit my song and follow through with the business of collecting and dispersing the monies that is generated by the song. Most small and/or self published publishing entities aren’t any where near expert enough to do this on their own, nor do they typically have the required resources monetarily or through the all important relationships with the industry decision makers that takes sometimes years to attain. When it comes to the all important industry contacts, a music publisher must be only the best steward of this vital information. Professional publishers will never divulge industry contact information for any reason, even at the risk of alienating insistent songwriters and other industry outsiders hoping to capitalize on you’re hard work and industry devotion that takes years to develop. Ive had several songwriters unjustly angry at me because I wouldnt tell them who I had a song on hold with or who I was pitching to. I even had a lady on Twitter openly say my contact list was a fantasy since I wouldnt share it with her. Ill never forget a member of the band FOGHAT (and friend of mine) told her she has to work for her own contact list and never expect to be handed this info freely. I still snicker at her being such an amateur to this day.
