Shoving the knees out during the pull does a couple things. It - TopicsExpress

Shoving the knees out during the pull does a couple things. It lengthens the adductors which allows them to contribute more to hip extension. A longer muscle is able to produce more force. Shoving the knees out will also artificially shorten the femur. This gets the hips closer to the bar. If you are struggling with the deadlift try narrowing your stance to hip width or so at the heels, push your knees out into the arms at the setup and continue to push the knees out as the bar goes up. You can see in this series of photos Shauna OMalley Rowdon gets the knees out from the start and continues pushing them out as the bar goes up.
