< ¤ > Shutdown, restrictions cripple life in Kashmir Srinagar: Life across the Kashmir Valley came to a grinding halt on Tuesday in wake of the shutdown called by separatists and stringent security measures that were put in place to ensure that Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s2-day visit to Kashmir passes off peacefully. Pertinently, gunmen on Monday killed eight soldiers in the deadliest attack in Srinagar. Reports said that police and paramilitary men have been deployed in strength in different parts of Srinagar to thwart any militant strike. Dr Singh would be accompanied by Congress president Sonia Gandhi for a two-day visit in which he would inspect major infrastructure projects and inaugurate part of a railway line to connect north and south Kashmir. The Prime Minister is expected to arrive on Tuesday afternoon.
