Sicilian cities of San Gregorio di Catania & Vizzini (featured in - TopicsExpress

Sicilian cities of San Gregorio di Catania & Vizzini (featured in both photographs) honor their patron-saint, which is San Gregorio Magno that was the Pope Gregory the First (540–604 A.D.) that was the namesake for “Gregorian Chant”, but not “The Gregorian Calendar” that we enjoy today, that was Pope Gregory XIII that had introduced our calendar in 1582. Saint Gregory the Great appears to also have significance for the Catholic Diocese of Caltagirone that overlaps into more than one province in Sicily, not to mention all the locations on the pennisula of Italy. As to the Sicilian cities of Vizzini & San Gregorio di Catania, both are within Province of Catania with Vizzini (religiously speaking) in the Diocese of Caltagirone. If Greg is somehow part of your last-name (cognome), or first-name, then theres a good chance that it was in honor of the saint celebrated today, although there are numerous other saints by the name of Saint Gregory or San Gregorio. Aside from the Italian version of Saint Gregory the Great, the versions in the language of Sicilian are: Grigoriu, Gricoriu, Grigorju, Grigorj and Griorj. And, it is strange to see a Sicilian name without an ending-vowel, such as Grigorj & Griorj, although I suspect it is from the dialect of [Gallo-Italia of Sicily] found only a few towns, such as Piazza Armerina (Ciazza). Speaking of language differences, the English name of Craig isnt related at all to the name of Greg, as Craig is ultimately from Celtic origins with the meaning of “rock” with Gregory ultimately Latin & Greek with a meaning of “watchful” or “to alert” that probably associated with those literally involved with shepherding or figuratively the religiously devoted that were thought of in terms of being a shepherd. Other names in Italy that are derivatives of the name of Gregory (Gregorius in Latin) are as follows. Masculine: Gregorino, Gregoriello, Gorio, Goro, Gorello, Goretto, Gorino Feminine: Gregoria, Gregorina. Goretta, Gorina ((((( The attached map is of The Dioceses of Sicily versus Provinces of Sicily. ))))) Written & Researched by Benny Anthony of Kansas City, Missouri (USA)
