But since the eurozone crisis began in 2009, Italy has struggled with rising unemployment, and more than 40 percent of young people are unemployed. The South of Italy is particularly hard-hit by the crisis. In Sicily, young people are leaving the island to find work in the north of the country or elsewhere in Europe. Sicily has also become a landing point for migrants making the perilous journey across the Mediterranean from North Africa to reach European shores. AJ+ brought Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi to the city of Catania to listen to Sicilians speak their minds.
