Sick and tired of failing IELTS? What is the OET EXAM? The Occupational English Test evaluates the English language competence of people who have trained as medical and health practitioners in one country and wish to gain provisional registration to practise their profession in an English-speaking context. In most cases, applicants are subsequently required by their professional board or council to sit a test of professional knowledge. The test is currently used by governing bodies of the professions at state and national level in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. Each board or council determines the result required from candidates to meet the language competency standards required in order to function in their profession. How to get registration as a Health Professional in Australia The national agency (APHRA Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) is responsible for registration and accreditation of seven health professions in Australia covered by the OET Exam. They are as follows: - Dental Board of Australia Medical Board of Australia Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Optometry Board of Australia Pharmacy Board of Australia Physiotherapy Board of Australia Podiatry Board of Australia The OET exam is also recognised by the following regulatory bodies: - Medical Board of Western Australia, Australian Dental Council,Dietitians Association of Australia, Nurses & Midwives Board of Western Australia, Council of Occupational Therapists Registration Boards (Aust & NZ) Inc, Australian Institute of Radiography, Speech Pathology Australia, Australasian Veterinary Boards Council Inc, Dental Council of New Zealand, Nursing Council of New Zealand, Pharmacy Council of New Zealand, Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand, Veterinary Council of New Zealand and Singapore Medical Council. Overseas qualified Health Professionals must meet the English Language requirements as a part of the registration process. Internationally qualified applicants who did not complete their secondary education in English must demonstrate that they have the necessary English language skills for registration purposes. This requires: a minimum score of A or B grade in OET test results to be obtained within two years prior to registration application. Exemptions: National Boards (with the exception of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia) may grant an exemption from the requirements where the applicant provides evidence that they: completed secondary education that was taught and assessed in English in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom or United States of America and hold tertiary qualifications in the relevant professional discipline that was taught and assessed in English in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom or United States of America.
