“Sierra Leone is making huge progress in Disability issues” said Executive Secretary of NCPWD The Executive Secretary, Madam Jannet Rogers of the National Commission for persons with Disability (NCPWD) has on Thursday 25th July 2013 disclosed that Sierra Leone is making huge progress in issues of person with Disability (PWD). “Sierra Leone is making huge progress in Disability issues” she said. The Executive Secretary made this disclosure at a one day sensitization workshop for PWD at the National Stadium presidential Lounge Syke Street in Freetown, with the theme, “Inclusive Health Services for all”. Addressing disabled community at the program which was collaborated by Sierra Leone Union on Disability Issue (SWDI) and sight savers through the support of European Union, Madam Junnet Rogers said the commission which was set up by H.E. Ernest Bai Koroma is on its infantry, but according to her, it is a benefit for PWD’s she stated that they will make sure that there be a fear playing field for all in health including PWD’s, and that they will ensure well being and equal rights all. She maintained that the commission will focus on the issues of health, education, legal rights, empowerment and advocacy for PWD’s .Earlier she commented against the absent of the Minister and Deputy Ministers of Health and Sanitation, and that their presence should have been a big progress as according to her, the issues have to do with health. Previously before this speaker, the Chairperson of the program Mr. Kabbakeh Noah said, the workshop was looking at access to health for PWD’s and that the campaign is a four year project put together by sight savers. He said sight savers have been in the campaign for years now. He noted that they are hoping to secure government support and commitment in their fight. He furthered that disability is a national issue and it should not be left to them alone. The overview of the project was given by the president of SWD, Kabba Franklyn Bangura who said that the project was funded by European Union for four years. He said that their partner sight saver is morning from charity to development. He went on that the aim of the project is for PWD’s to be included in free health care, as he said PWD’s are most challenging in access health. He stated that section 17 of the disability Act says that PWD’s should be provided for free health. He further stated that the campaign was the second one, and that they will be heading to Bo& Kenema in short time. For their part, the project coordinator of sight savers, Mrs. Tangae Kondo revealed that in the country. She said they were much interested in partnering with PWD’s and related organizations. She further revealed that they are going to continue their support disability issues in the country. Giving the keynote address the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Gender and Children Affairs, Mustapha B. Attila said that promoting right of PWD’s will help reduce poverty. He said the issue of health care for all is complex. He noted that the Awareness of PWD’s issues is low, and that capacity of state and non state actors to address PWD issues is low which he said is affecting them greatly. He told the disability community that the Ministry of Social Welfare Gender and Children Affairs and NCPWD will not allow any form of discrimination from any Nurse, Doctor or the general public. He went on to encourage them that they will surly win the fight of discrimination, and promised them their cooperation, coordination and support. He said the government and their ministry will work hard to tackle the issues of PWD’s.
