Sigh. Liberal, as used in the US means a particular thing (a different thing than what it means in the entire rest of the world, incidentally). Liberal, as used in the US, refers to the center-left. Liberals are to the left of moderates and to the right of social democrats. They are far to the right of the left, which is composed of socialists of various stripes, including Marxists and anarchists. Socialists, by the way, does not mean people who support big government - some socialists, in fact, feel government should be abolished altogether (others do not). The common believe among all socialists is the rejection of private ownership of the means of production. Obama is neither a socialist nor a liberal. Hes basically an opportunist and does not seem particularly tethered to ideology, but but and large his policies are largely center-right positions.
