This September Buff Epic riders will ascend Boulder Canyon, climb to Ward, roll down to Lyons and then up around Carter Lake and back to campus. That’s 110 miles with an elevation gain of 6,253 feet. If you gave it your all in last year’s epic, this year you’ll have to give 110 percent. That’s more epic than a mere century ride. It’s epic-plus. This is the signature event of the 11th annual Elevations Credit Union Buffalo Bicycle Classic. OK, even if your ride doesn’t rival the efforts of Achilles in the Trojan War, this year’s ride will include positive changes from last year. Last year, you gave us great feedback on the ride. We listened. This year we will do a staged start to solve the crowding problem in Boulder Canyon. That means you need to sign up soon to join the first stage of 300 riders. Additionally, you’ll see better route maps, better aid stations, more restrooms and more prizes. As before, we have a range of rides for all abilities: a 14-mile Little Buff family-friendly ride, plus rides of 35, 50 and 70 miles. Each one is epic fun. We understand that a rider who moves up to the 70-mile route from 35 miles is tackling his or her own epic. The Buff Bike Classic has already raised more than $1.8 million in scholarships for University of Colorado students. Now in our 11th year, we’ve awarded nearly 800 scholarships. That might not be, technically, epic, but it’s a bunch of needy students getting help from you. That support would not be possible without our generous sponsors and enthusiastic riders.
