Sikkim’s much touted ‘organically produced, scientifically processed’ milk may not actually be so after all. That is the claim made by Dr. Mechung Bhutia, MLA, Rumtek-Martam, who continues to bust the ‘organic’ claims made by the ruling party. This is what he has stated in a Facebook post: “Visited Sikkim Milk Union at Tadong yesterday. MD was out of station so met Dr.N.K.Pradhan (manager) and Vishal Tiwari (DGM), Quality Control and Plant Head. On enquiring about the organic certification of milk labelled on the milk pouch....it was informed to me that they were instructed to label so by the higher/highest authority.It was revealed/informed that the plant does not have the equipment to check some hazardous components of milk like antibiotics, hormones (oxytocin) and the feed history of the milching cows.” Dr. Mechung contention is that how can Sikkim Milk certify their produce as ‘organically produced, scientifically processed’ when it does not actually do so.
