Siliya says MMD is Doing Well MMD spokesperson Dora Siliya says the opposition political has done very well under a hostile environment. Featuring on Muvi Television’s The Assignment programme Siliya said she had never been to State House to discuss auctioning the MMD to the PF. Siliya said it was shameful that some members wanted party President Nevers Mumba removed because he was Bemba. The former Petauke Central lawmaker failed to categorically state whether she would contest the presidency if the convention takes place. “I am convinced that MMD is still a very popular party, I am convinced but obviously after losing an election at times people feel a lot of despair, confused and after 20 years in government,” she said. “In fact MMD HAS DONE VERY WELL because it was specifically targeted. It was the only party in parliament that was targeted with nullifications.” Siliya added: “So it will be expected that if that was the plan and as you said that the PF planned, it was expected that our numbers will dwindle and I don’t believe that is a reflection of what will come in the future.” She said that the PF had failed to deliver on their campaign promises and the electorates were angry with government. “The Zambians are feeling such despair now because the money in the pockets that was promised to them has been taken away by the removal of subsidies through increased fuel prices, high mealie meal prices, lack OF MEDICINES IN hospitals and nurses being fired,” she said. “All that gain they were promised has been taken away by people that promised them development in 90 days. We in MMD continue to say that we need to stay relevant. It is not because we just want a position in NEC it is because we want to identify with Zambians.” Siliya said the convention was the only way to reenergize the former ruling party. “I think we are realists in politics. The only way to resolve an issue is having an election. It is the only way you can determine your popularity. To just sit on the table to say you are popular I am popular means nothing in politics. The only way is to go for a convention especially in MMD where we truly believe in the power of the vote,” she said. “To wait until 2016 there will be no party, it will just be a name people sitting in Lusaka claiming I am MMD president or vice president if there is no party on the ground because the members will be leaving, defecting to PF or UPND because they have been frustrated. The only way to regalvanize this party at this point in time with at least two years before an election is now so that we prepare. Those who are real politicians will fight their way.” She said the MMD leadership will have to own up to collective failure. “I believe the current leadership in MMD has to own up and say what do we do let us go to a convention. Let us identify leaders who can inspire and have attraction,” she said. Siliya in league with party vice presidents Michael Kaingu and Brian Chituwo have been championing calls for an extraordinary convention with only Western Province having backed their call while the rest of the provinces have rejected their call. Kaingu admitted that he had been secretly been meeting Patriotic Front Secretary General Wynter Kabimba and Post Newspapers Editor Fred M’membe with the possibility of selling out the MMD to the PF. zambiareports/2014/04/21/siliya-says-mmd-well/
