Silver Star Medal presented posthumously to Australian WWII hero General Herbert “Hawk” Carlisle, Commander, U.S. Pacific Air Forces, presented a Silver Star Medal to the family of Edward Mobsby during a ceremony at the Australian War Memorial. The Silver Star Medal is the third highest award the US Department of Defense can present for gallantry. Flying Officer Mobsby was a Royal Australian Air Force member assigned to the 90th Bomber Squadron, a United States Army Air Corps unit assigned to the Pacific. On July 26, 1942, he was killed in action during a mission over Papua New Guinea. It is for their actions during this mission that Flying Officer Mobsby and his American aircrew were awarded the Silver Star. The U.S. Air Force reviewed Flying Officer Mobsby’s records and awarded the medal in February 2014. General Carlisle presented the Silver Star to Flying Officer Mobsby’s two daughters, Ms. Jennifer M. Read and Ms. Rae H. Rayner, at a ceremony attended by twenty family and friends as well as members of the Australian and U.S. militaries.
