Since 1919, Christian Rohlfs watercolors captivate with their intensity of coloring, the dissolving of the object, as well as the lively done brush style. Next to religious and general figurative motives, flowers mainly symbolize as a new main subject of his works the beginning of a new period of creation. Exemplarily, our flower still life shows fundamental forms of expression of this phase. You can read from the sheet mainly the superior mastery of the technique, which had been invented by Rohlfs himself. Color pigments are painted with water without the conventional binders. This way, he is able to work spontaneously in front of the motive and the reproductions of direct impressions of his characteristic handwritings are possible. Due to the ease of the appliance of colors, there is nearly no other painting technique, which allows colored nuances to be developed in such a differentiated way.
