Since her commission into the Air Force in 1992, Colonel Jean Havens feels a sense of camaraderie with her fellow Air Force colleagues, no matter where she’s stationed. “It’s like one big family,” Havens said. For instance, while serving in Iraq from 2006 to 2007, and again from 2008 to 2009, training Iraqi Air Force pilots how to operate a base in Kirkuk, Havens recalls her fellow squadron members remembering each other’s birthdays and celebrating holidays together. Being thousands of miles away from home, that companionship gave Havens strength. “We made sure to watch out for each other,” Havens explained. Havens grew up in Roanoke. She became interested in the Air Force after joining a branch the ROTC program at the University of Tennessee to assist paying for school. Commissioned as a second lieutenant, her first assignment was in Omaha, Nebraska working in computer maintenance. Later, Havens was trained as a pilot to fly an F-16.
