We all wish that war wasnt a necessity. The horrors of any kind of warfare are destructive to the harmony and peace of every human. It was the great writer, Hemingway, that wrote: “Any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.” The meaning of this phrase is an easy one to decipher. Hemmingway, through the twisting of a famous quote, teaches us that there can be no war without loss for all of humanity. Whenever there is reason for the bell to toll, you need not ask whom it tolls for, it tolls for all of us. However, your stance on war should never diminish the bravery and courage that was and is displayed by those souls that choose to place the honor of your livelihood, your country, and your luxuries, above their personal safety as they sought to manifest a world where we can speak freely, think freely, and live freely, through their unspeakable sacrifices. Your opinion on war will always be an immutable fact that defines whether or not you agree with its necessity. Your opinion on whether or not you should honor the brave men and women that chose to risk all they had to safeguard all that we have, should not be subject to that same level of disagreement. For whether or not you agree with the reasons for war, you cannot deny the bravery and heart of the millions that have fought for you. For all those that have sacrificed so much so that we may all have more, you shall always be remembered. There may come a day when the world does not need war. There may come a day when reason and intellect are the primary cornerstones of a common human interaction towards a greater tomorrow, but as long as there is a call to be answered, we must be thankful for those that heed the call.
