Since the State of Arkansas had several cases of rabies in 2013 I - TopicsExpress

Since the State of Arkansas had several cases of rabies in 2013 I think there needs to be clarification in regards to rabies vaccinations. Contrary to what you may read rabies vaccinations must be given by a licensed veterinarian. Yes you can purchase it and administer it yourself however law enforcement can not recognize it as a current vaccination. Rabies Control Act 20-19-301 (6) clearly states it must be approved by the USDA or the State Board of Health and administered by a licensed veterinarian of the Department of Health. You may ask...why cant I go to the Co-Op its a lot cheaper. Here is why...once the vaccination is ordered from the supplier was it properly refrigerated during transit? Did it sit in a truck somewhere for several days at room temperature? Once it arrived at its final destination how long did it sit in the stock room before being refrigerated? How do you know it was kept properly refrigerated? Did you know that if left out for longer than 30 minutes at room temp it is not effective? And last but not least....if your pet is found with the Co-Op tag the only information provided is a tag number. There is no way for any officer to research that number and find an owner. Spend the extra money and rabies vaccinate the smart way...by your veterinarian....rabies is deadly....not only to your pet but to you as well....
