Since today was the 5th Sunday, Relief Society was held in the chapel with the Priesthood. Johnny Meuchel facilitated a discussion about the results of President Sangster’s challenge to us: “President Sangster has invited us to do a seven-day experiment: (1) purposeful prayer morning and evening for missionary opportunities and for the full-time missionaries, (2) read your scriptures a little longer and record spiritual impressions, (3) at least one meaningful gospel discussion each day, (4) eliminate any media that is not uplifting.” Those who participated in the challenge came to realize the increased spiritual power we need to hasten the work in our own lives! The following are the comments made by various members in the ward. Dee said that doing the experiment changed the way she talks to people with more of a missionary mind. Krista said that things that are important became critical. Katy loved the rekindled joy of discovery of the scriptures. Throughout the day she would find herself thinking about what she had read in the Book of Mormon. Marylynn became more aware of gratitude of blessings the Lord has given her. Allie J. commented that she had more courage to open her mouth and have gospel centered discussions with people of other faiths. In striving to have more purposeful prayer, Ali B. has made her evening prayers an extension of her morning prayers and then as the next morning rolls around, her morning prayers become an extension of her evening prayers, thus making prayer a much more effective conversation. Krista joked that the timing of the challenge was inconvenient for her because of her visit to her sister’s home who is very anti-LDS. However, instead of having a confrontation when her sister said, “Quit sending those dumb boys over”, she was able to kindly talk to her sister and explain that she had some of those “dumb boys” out serving a mission and would be very sad if her grandsons were treated the way she was treating the elders in her area. She stated that purposeful prayer keeps you on keel! Many other comments were made about the main purpose of sending young men on missions: missions mature them and they develop a deep love of the gospel (Jani), they are optimistic and hopeful that someone will hear their message (Krista), they learn how to recognize and identify the Spirit(Chris), they receive practical world experience (Howard), and they are new generation of leadership (Lucille). In conclusion, implementing the challenge improved our lives and gave more knowledge of the gospel that emboldened us to speak out. Our ward was definitely strengthened spiritually by participating in the challenge and many of us have adopted these goals into our everyday lives not just for this month but forever!
