Singapore ushered in the New Year on Thursday (Jan 1) with various countdown parties across the island. A crowd of some 25,000 revellers were at the Marina Bay Floating Platform, where they were treated to a star-studded seven-hour extravaganza. It was a special celebration not just to welcome in the New Year, but also to mark Singapores golden jubilee. The evenings celebrations were not limited to those at the Floating Platform. Residents in the heartlands were also treated to entertainment and slew of activities. At Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, revellers attempted to set a new Guinness World Record for the most number of people wearing balloon hats at one time. For the event, an estimated 12,000 hats have were made. The current record stands at just over 4,000 people - set in Utah, United States, in 2007. The plan to set a new record was meant as a gift to Singapore at the start of the nations 50th birthday celebrations. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was also in attendance, and he penned his wishes for the nation on a clay tablet, part of a stunning visual art installation (made up of 2,500 clay tablets) created by residents in the community. Over at Pasir Ris-Punggol, residents were entertained by stilt-walkers and jugglers and participated in a host of other activities. Joining in the celebrations was Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, who took the time to pay tribute to Singapores pioneers. Said Mr Teo: As we celebrate SG50 next year in 2015, its timely to remember the hard work and contributions of our Pioneers. But we must also look ahead to the future. With the Government and all Singaporeans working together, we will ensure that Singapore remains a good home with opportunities for all Singaporeans, regardless of whether they are young or they are old.
