“Sinking sand” by Johan Terblanche (10/10/2014) Somewhere in the early 1800’s Edward Mote wrote the song “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less A few weeks ago while listening to it I had this urge to write on it. But I had to set it aside since it seemed to be a “my-word” and not a “God-Word”. Wednesday night, like so many other nights, I could not sleep. Since I felt hot, I was lying on the cold tile floor in our lounge. Somewhere after two, I was talking to the Lord when the Lord reminded me of the song. The Lyrics goes “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus name.” The refrain goes “On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand. All other ground is sinking sand.” Before I continue, let me remind you of God’s infinite love. Like I have said before; if only we could grasp the full extent of God’s love. But please hear what the Lord is asking us today: “Where do you find yourself today; on Christ the solid Rock or in sinking sand?” All other ground is sinking sand: what then is sinking sand? If you believe in any God other than God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, you are on sinking sand. If your trust is in Buddha, Mohamed, Allah or any other than Jesus Christ who died on the cross at Calvary you are on sinking sand. Some proclaim to be Charismatic, Pentecostal, Presbyterian, Methodist or something else but let me tell you, if your church life is more important than your relationship with the God of the church, you are on sinking sand. Some believe in baptism of babies while other baptise by full submersion, but let me tell you if your spiritual life is based on the amount of water used, you’re on sinking sand. If you think that saint Paul, saint Peter or even mother Maria can intervene on your behalf you are on sinking sand. If you think you can make it on your own, that you don’t need Jesus Christ, you are on sinking sand. If you think that your skills or talents are enough to see you through life, you are on sinking sand. If you think that by being positive, or by emitting so called “positive energy” you can influence the gods of the universe, you are on sinking sand. If you think you can impress God by reading your Bible, praying nice prayers and doing good to others without having a relationship, born out of repentance and acceptance of Jesus Christ you are on sinking sand. In short, if Jesus Christ is not at the centre of your life, If Jesus Christ is not your Saviour, your Lord, your Master and your King, you are on sinking sand. Hear what Jesus said! Jesus said: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6) Jesus also said: “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.” (John 10:9) There is only one way and that is Jesus Christ the Way. It is written in Acts 4:12 “Salvation is to be found through him alone; in all the world there is no one else whom God has given who can save us. (Good news translation) Paul wrote: “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13) I do not know every reader. But what I do know is that some of us might find themselves in sinking sand today. Maybe, you have never accepted Christ as your Saviour, maybe you have been pulling away from God or circumstances forced you to doubt in Him, maybe you have been rejected, hurt or even abused by others. Whatever the reason, if you find yourself in sinking sand, know that God is standing ready, jesus is reaching out to you with nail pierced hands to draw you out of the sinking sand and to place you back upon the rock, which is Jesus Christ Himself. “What have I to gain?” some might ask. I’m asking: “What have you to lose?” Allow Christ into your life, every area of your life and you too will be able to sing: I heard an old, old story, how a Savior came from glory, How He gave His life on Calvary to save a wretch like me; I heard about His groaning, of His precious bloods atoning, Then I repented of my sins and won the victory. O victory in Jesus, My Savior, forever. He sought me and bought me with His redeeming blood; He loved me ere I knew Him and all my love is due Him, He plunged me to victory, beneath the cleansing flood.
