Sir Paul is coming, Im such a rube, Sir Paul is coming to town! I made it to the Wings over America tour a couple of weeks before those kids were stampeded to death at the Who concert in Cincinnati. I remember that crush at the door but I also remember how wowed I was by the show. The music and lights remain unequaled in my mind but the thing that really struck me was how charismatic he was. The only other performer Ive ever seen to be so radiant was David Bowie. I did have a brief personal encounter with Kris Kristofferson in Nashville back in those 70s and was stunned by what a perfect human specimen he was, his greek god quality good looks and coolness were visceral, but that was something different. Im pretty sure it is not so much that these guys radiate as much as it is, we endow them with this mesmerizing power. Still, the glow exists. It is interesting to look back and recall how I thought the Beatles were going to improve the world, Im constantly surveying the scene for rising icons, thought Pussy Riot may have been in contention at one point on the potential to change the world scale but as usual, my naive optimism has been shattered. As it turns out the only thing it seems to me the Beatles changed is that the cheap seats now go for 72 bucks.
