Sitting in on a private discussion about directors and their DoPs - TopicsExpress

Sitting in on a private discussion about directors and their DoPs got me thinking: You have to leave the set amazed by what you got, not underwhelmed. You have to have chemistry; your moments together have to be magical and inspiring! A director and his producer is like a marriage, slow, steady and enduring. But a director and his cinematographer is a short lived but torrid love affair. A few days to a few weeks of unbridled passion where you cant believe how amazing things are turning out. No, its not exactly what you saw in your head, but somehow its better, somehow it makes more sense and evokes more of what you were trying to say! And although cinematography may seem to be a superficial, objective, easily gauged medium, where camera and gear are defining factors, its not! While it is a highly technical trade, good cinematography transcends mechanics and specs and enters the realms of true artistry where aesthetic, passion and creativity meet in a subjective spot light, like a dance with two people who know all the lyrics but have never heard the song before!
