World’s most expensive letter: Abraham Lincoln’s letter ($ 3,401 million) Lincoln’s administration was quite open – usually all petitions and letters were getting answers. In the spring of 1864, the president received the so-called “children’s petition” signed by 195 boys and girls. In the petition children begged the president to release from slavery all minors. On 5 April the same year, Lincoln sent his response, in which he assured that all child slaves will be released. This particular document was the most expensive letter in history – it was sold at Southeby’s auction in New York in April 2008 for a record amount.
