Sitting on the train to Paris, it just dawned on me how silent - TopicsExpress

Sitting on the train to Paris, it just dawned on me how silent everyone is: iPhone, tablets & laptops rule over human interaction, but thats not very surprising; in the occidental world as we know it, there never really was loud conversations with strangers or anything resembling interest in other people since that is mostly perceived as intrusion. I remember a flight to Lebanon back in 1995: people standing up everywhere with a cigarette in their hand, having loud conversations about any possible subject from the political situation to the most futile things, acting like they had known each other for years, eating, drinking, ordering Jack Daniels on the rocks, singing, cracking nuts (mine), and basically having a party on the plane. As Europeans would put it. I remember this flight like it was yesterday. At the time I thought it was absolutely horrible and was secretly cursing at how uncivilized people can be. The cherry on the cake being when during landing, people clapped their hands so enthusiastically youd thought the plane had crashed. Today, almost 20 years later, in this sad world where technology rules, Id give anything to experience another one of these flights. And yet what am I doing typing on my iPhone?
