Sitting quietly, planning the Thanksgiving menu and guest list . My mind takes me away for a moment or two, on one of those little mini vacations from the stress and trauma of everyday life that are a part of my coping mechanisms..How magical the holiday season seemed then, just having everything HAPPEN. I didnt see the work involved, it all felt like so much fun..Dad would bring in the two sets of saw horses and the planks that with the addition of a few tablecloths and place settings became a banquet table that, in my young mind, was suitable for Royalty...the smells of the goodies filled the little house with the aromas of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. My grandmother and I would wipe all of the glasses and dinnerware until they sparkled when the sunlight streamed through the frosted windows of our living room..The little kitchen became the hub of activities and the only safe observation place was from under the open, country kitchen sink... Then, family members started to arrive, Mom still in her house dress and apron...excusing herself for a moment to dress...there was Uncle Ed and Aunt Nelda, Uncle Don and Aunt Winnie (she was the family gossip), Uncle Clarence and Aunt Evelyn (the Irish side of the family) and assorted cousins for the childrens table all bringing gifts to add to the feast.....but the greatest gift of all was the warmth and love and pride I felt when my family prayed the Thanksgiving Grace. How special it is to have theses memories from the little chicken farm in Verona......I still feel the GLOW
