Six Potential End~Of~The~World Scenarios 1) KILLER COMETS AND/OR ASTEROIDS Around 65 million years ago, some sort of asteroid or comet nearly ten miles in diameter is thought to have slammed into earth off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. It left a 186~mile long hole. Mass extinction ensued, as 90 percent of species vanished. Circa 535 A.D., a dense swarm of space gravel swirled into our orbit, pummeling the atmosphere and kicking up enough debris to cause severely long winters. Crops died out. Nations were destroyed by famine, which might have been what plunged Europe into the Dark Ages. Back in 1908, a comet fragment 130 feet wide flamed into Tunguska, Siberia. It exploded in the air, flattening a thousand square miles of uninhabited forest and detonating with a force estimated at ten megatons (700 times the power of the Hiroshima bomb). Had it hit a major metropolitan center like New York or Moscow, the city would have disappeared. Could it happen again? Oh, yeah, Scientists say asteroids or comets with at least a six~mile diameter are big enough to cause global extinction by kick~starting a new Ice Age and showering the planet with corrosive rain. These killer space rocks bust through the door every 50 to 100 million years. Want scary? More than a thousand of these monsters are thought to exist in earths general area, though none appear to be headed for us. At least not yet.
