Film Briefs: Chef - I saw this lovely, little independent film in early May and due to a successful run at the box office all summer (it quietly earned over $30 million) it has been re-released over the labor day weekend. A repeat viewing reminded me why I was so charmed by it in the first place and I fell in love with it all over again. Jon Favreau writes, directs and stars in his first indie film since Swingers and Made after having devoted so much time to the Marvels Iron Man cannon. Favreau is clearly channeling from a little from his own artistic experiences as he plays a celebrity chef attempting to rebound from a twitter fiasco with a notorious critic by opening up a food truck with his son and getting in touch with his original love of the culinary arts. The film works on many levels... it is a solid road movie, as well as a sweet father/son picture, and of course, it is a great addition to the foodie genre. It boasts many cameos: Scarlett Johanssen, Robert Downey Jr., Dustin Hoffman, and many others. No one phones it in and every actor is clearly having a blast contributing to this labor of love. The insights and honesty this film contains about artists and their critics is refreshing. It is light on its feet and funny. This film has real heart to it and you will feel like youve discovered a hidden gem after it is over.
