Six months to general elections, the People’s Democratic Party - TopicsExpress

Six months to general elections, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is yet to come out with a plan of action on convention organization despite the significance and constitutional necessity warranting the convocation of one, as the party braces for far-reaching polls in 2015. Although there is provision for the office of an acting Chairman, it is obvious that operating on acting capacity only weakens and limits the significant role. For any party to face a monumental election like a general one, it is imperative to have a legitimate, legally elected, and constitutionally heralded leadership that can utilize the provisions of the party to ensure cohesion, unity and focus. Under the acting role, as provided now, and with the elections staring the party in the face, it is common sense and politically expedient that the leadership should be legally empowered to exercise its constitutional role. At present, the hands of the National Chairman of the party seem to have been tightened with series of restrictions and constitutional limitations in decision-making on internal party operations, campaigns, primaries, etc. There could be debate from some quarters about whether or not the National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu is restricted in carrying out his duties to take the party under acting capacity. But the fact remains that there are serious structural problems with commanding a gigantic project like the PDP with the limited powers provided under acting capacity. Under acting capacity, certain decisions that could have hitherto been carried out by the Chairman are delayed due to the restrictions and limitations as provided by the rules guiding the party. Decisions delayed that could have negative consequences on the operations, or even success of the party during any elections. It is also instructive to note that the office of the Chairman is not limited to elections again as seen in the provisions above. It is a well-structured body of sequential responsibilities that complement each other in the struggle to ensure the continuous growth of the party and its subsequent success during any elections. As a trusted party loyalist, a dedicated and experienced democrat and politician the party must brace up to ensure a proper convention is conducted to enable the party move on from its earlier slumber that was arrested with the emergence of the Chairman at the helm of affairs of the party. Over the year, Adamu Mu’azu has proven his various strengths. More than ever, the PDP under him has grown stronger as well as his commitment to the President. It is a collective agreement that his chairmanship has brought sanity into the affairs of the party, the recent amicable settlement of the Adamawa gubernatorial debacle and the success at the Ekiti State gubernatorial elections are proves to these maturity and sense of capabilities. The party is now stronger more than before, a convention at this material that will formalize the status of the party leadership time will therefore, further improve its strength. Party stakeholders should therefore work together to ensure that a proper convention is conducted that will formalize the current leadership’s positions so that they will concentrate on the struggle to keep the PDP on top in 2015.
