Six years ago, I stopped school shopping with my kids. Once they hit middle school and high school, I gave them a debit card and a budget and they started doing their own shopping for school supplies. (Not clothes, we wear uniforms.) I get to roam around the store or sit in the coffee shop. They have complete control over what they want to purchase it as long as they buy all of the items on the school list. Usually, they have extras at home left over from the previous school year and so they get to work the system if they can. However, they are responsible to pay me back for any overage and if they forget something on the list, they have to come out of their pocket for it later. Its been a win-win at our house for many years! In order for it to work, however, your kids have to be responsible and willing to use their cell phone calculator to make sure everything adds up!
