Six years ago on this sad day, my best friend, my mother, Catherine Ann Dennehy, née Regan left this world after a nearly 5 year battle of complications from several massive strokes. She died horribly and the only comfort I take from her passing is that she was finally released from her suffering. Not a day goes by that I dont think of her. It is very fitting that she left us on Veterans day since she was a veteran of so much hardship. I am thankful that we left nothing unsaid to each other. Hers was a remarkable life from raising 5 children as a single parent, to helping to save WWII refugees to going back to work in the 70s after being a dedicated homemaker for decades. She always found time to nurture her children and fought like a tigress to help those in need and those she loved. She was soft-spoken and the lilt of her County Kerry brogue was magical, but she never lacked the courage to tell some jerk to Take gas! She claimed she couldnt sing because she was tone-deaf, but after I studied voice I shared with her that she merely had pitch problems. Despite that, anytime she let her guard down and sang I was delighted since it was the sweetest music I have ever experienced, wrong notes and all. She was fiercely proud of her Irish heritage, but equally proud of her adopted country and became a citizen in her 70s. She was the definition of love. When my kid brother Kevin called her in the late 80s, scared and scarred with AIDS to tell her, Mommy, Im sick. She simply replied, Son, come home. She cried many nights in the dark, but she ignored the ignorant naysayers and nursed my brother for the last 4 years of his life. I am so proud to be her son. I hope God is now holding her in the hollow of His hand.
