Sixty nine years ago today, the Japanese replied affirmatively to the demand for their unconditional surrender. The events depicted in this video took place two and a half weeks later, on September 2nd, 1945, onboard the USS Missouri, where the formal surrender took place. But for all intents and purposes, armed aggressors met, and were defeated by the overwhelming military might of free peoples who were unwilling to be enslaved. And even though I could legitimately make the case for Israel using its overwhelming military might over Hamas in the Gaza, thats not my purpose for this post. Besides, its self-evident to any reasonable observer. What I do want to address is a comment in the newsreel that this was the greatest event in world history. And while its certainly a very important event, its far from the greatest event in world history. I can fully understand the reporters excitement. But it failed to bring peace to the world! Almost immediately, the Cold War began, with Communist aggression in Eastern Europe and in Asia. Then Hot War in Korea, Vietnam, and elsewhere. The Middle East saw its share of war. Upheavals worldwide. Nations forming alliances out of fear of the other nations forming their alliances. The fact is, man cannot live in peace. Isaiah 48:22 There is no peace, saith the Lord, unto the wicked. As long as man is in rebellion against God, there will be no peace. The newscaster was was wrong because the most important event in world history took place in a garden just outside Jerusalem. It so terrified a detachment of Roman soldiers that they fainted from terror. A large stone that had been set in place to seal a tomb rolled away, and the (formerly) dead man, whose tomb they had been detailed to guard, Jesus of Nazareth, walked out. Those Roman soldiers were no sissies! They were tough, professional soldiers. They were part of the best trained, best equipped, best disciplined army the world had ever seen. Even todays armies are modelled on the Roman Army. And they were no rookies. They knew dead when they saw it. They knew without a doubt that Jesus of Nazareth was DEAD! Jesus was dead! Everybody who witnessed His crucifixion, friend and foe alike knew Jesus of Nazareth was DEAD! Friday He was buried in a borrowed tomb. (Why purchase something youre only going to need for the weekend?) He was DEAD! But just to make sure His followers (who were hiding in abject terror for fear of being crucified themselves) didnt steal His DEAD body to fake His resurrection, a detail of Roman soldiers was posted to guard the tomb for the next three days. Friday night, nothing to report. Saturday, all quiet. Sunday morning. And all Heaven broke loose! That heavy stone rolled up the incline, and Jesus Christ walked out ALIVE! And soldiers in the best army in the world fainted in terror. But not only them! Satan and all the forces of Hell had a mass coronary! Jesus had conquered death itself. The biggest weapon in Hells arsenal was destroyed. Jesus was dead, but now Hes alive! And if THAT isnt the greatest event in world history...I dont even know how to complete this sentence...but when that news got out, it turned the entire world upside down! Acts 13:38-41 38 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses. 40 Beware therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets; 41 Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish:for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you. And just as surely as September 2nd 1945 followed August 14th 1945, someday, Jesus will return for the official surrender of Satan, and bring real peace to the world. Revelation 19:6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia:for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. Have YOU made peace with Him?
