Skelton Tour – Day Four – Cambridge to Diss On our last day in Cambridge, we visited Peterhouse, a university college which is in some way connected to John Skelton. One of Skelton’s acquaintances was Dr. William Rukshaw, the vicar of Topcliffe and a Fellow of Peterhouse between 1460 and 1480. While most of Peterhouse was not open to visitors, the gate was left unlocked, so we went for a stroll through the lovely grounds... Even though John Skelton left Cambridge for Oxford, we continued our northern-bound journey to Norfolk, where Skelton was probably born. In the little town of Diss, the poet was rector of St. Mary’s church until at least 1509. When we arrived at the train station and entered the industrial outskirts, we could easily identify with Skelton’s feeling of exile and disappointment after having spent time in metropolitan and academic surroundings. But, once we reached Skelton Road and saw the idyllic town centre, our spirits were lifted again and we have high hopes for tomorrow.
