The case caused an uproar in the media of the time, and crystallizes the divisions of the young nation between the anti-slavery states in the North and the pro -slavery state in the South. While Spanish vessel owners file a lawsuit to recover their cargo , an abolitionist city attorney calls for recognition of refugee status for those shipwrecked, and disagrees that these people are the goods.
