Slayer - South of Heaven (1988) Rating: 4.6 / 5 What was Slayer to do when it came to time to follow up what was perhaps the best thrash album ever made in Reign in Blood? Slayer decided to experiment a little by easing up on the gas pedal and put out the worthy South of Heaven. Reign in Blood was the perfect album for the time, fast and brutal as hell. Being in the impossible position of having to follow up a classic, Slayer did a exceptional job following up Reign in Blood with South of Heaven, my reasoning being that if Slayer would have immediately followed up Reign in Blood with just another fast and brutal album, the follow up would have never lived up to anyones expectations. From the opening notes of South of Heaven, Slayer stomps on everyones expectations and lets it be known that South of Heaven was not going to be Reign in Blood part two. South of Heaven is a great and varied thrash album, from the opening momentum builder South of Heaven, to the dark and dreary Spill the Blood, South of Heaven keeps you guessing while always remaining true to the Slayer name. Every song has its own identity, even the Judas Priest cover of Dissident Aggressor sounds right at home along side the bands originals. To this day, South of Heaven remains one of my all time favorite Slayer albums. South of Heaven also has its share of classics in the title track, Ghosts of War, Mandatory Suicide and Silent Screams.
